ELMER passed away in his home surrounded by loving family at the age of 108.
ELMER was predeceased by Gladys Law Bunfill, his loving wife; and by his father and mother, Harry & Mary Bunfill; and ten beloved Siblings.
ELMER survived two world pandemics: the Spanish Flu of 1918 and the current COVID-19 pandemic. Elmer supported his family of 13 during the Great Depression, often holding three jobs at the same time.
ELMER was a quiet member of "The Greatest Generation" being an Original Plank Holder of the U.S.S. Princeton. Elmer was a decorated Combat Veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart. Elmer survived nine major battles in the Pacific Theater, including the first carrier strikes on Rabul in November 1943, Tarawa November 1943, Marshall Islands 1944, Truk Lagoon 1944, the Mariana Islands June 1944, including the Great Mariana's Turkey Shoot with the Princeton narrowly missing a bomb on the Port Stern, Palau, and Leyte Gulf. The Princeton was sunk on October 24, 1944. Elmer also volunteered to be a Gunner on TBMS and he flew on anti-submarine patrols in addition to his other duties.
ELMER is survived by Daughter, Darla Trail, Son Terry Bunfill, Grandchildren: Rachel Morrow, Aaron Trail, John Trail Jr, and Great-Grandchildren, including Erin, Elisha, Isable, Olivia, Grace, Monty, and Aaron.
Surviving Nephews & Nieces include Robert, Shirley, Diane, Darlene, Lonie, & Larry A. Bunfill. Also included are Ricky, David, Mike, Dennis, and Harry Bunfill.
ELMER is the 21st oldest living VET ever treated at the VA Mather Hospital.
